About the journal

Povod is an independent journal by Sergey Malyshev. Each issue begins with one small thing and follows it towards documents, people and an answer that can be checked.

How I work

I begin with a narrow question, look for primary documents and test familiar claims against independent sources. When the published record runs out, I write to the person, archive, museum or company most likely to know.

Before publication, every issue must pass an editorial gate: its sources, unresolved questions and corrections must be recorded. A company story is not treated as established fact merely because the company repeats it.

The limits of the check remain visible. “No”, “not preserved” and no reply are not converted into speculation.

Replies and approval

I do not publish a correspondent's words without approval of the wording. Material replies are quoted rather than loosely paraphrased. Sources and image rights are listed in every issue.

Corrections

Errors are corrected in the article itself, with a date and an explanation. The original mistake is not hidden behind a silent replacement.

28 August 2026. The 1805 voyage story in “Crossing the Line Twice” was separated from the documented history of Linie after the ship's cargo record was checked against Trond Åm's research.
